The María Zambrano Center for Transatlantic Studies at the University of Malaga (AMZET) advocates for the continuous promotion of research regarding the relations between Spain and Ireland. For this purpose, it has announced the Spain-Ireland Awards that include three categories in different areas: The George Campbell Award, the Kate O’Brien Award, and the Robert Boyd Award.

The purpose of the Spain-Ireland Awards is to open new opportunities for research in different areas related to the relations between Spain and Ireland. These awards are sponsored by José Antonio Sierra Lumbreras. Each of the categories carries a prize of €1,200 for the winner. In addition, the project submission deadline will be extended for nine months, until 10th January 2022. The George Campbell Award will be granted to research works focused on the arts, music, and/or sport relationships since these were the personal interests of George Campbell. The Robert Boyd Award will be granted to research works focused on the historical relations between Spain and Ireland. The Kate O’Brien Award will be granted to journalistic and/or literary submissions (in a written or audiovisual format). In this last category, special consideration will be given to submissions with a gender perspective.

The names of these awards come from three historical figures in the field of the relations between Spain and Ireland. George Campbell was born in Arklow in 1917. One of the most celebrated Irish painters, he spent long periods in El Palo, a neighborhood in Malaga that appeared in many of his works. Kate O’Brien was a renowned Irish writer. Many of her books were about Spain, such as Mary Lavelle, That Lady, Farewell Spain, and Teresa of Ávila. Finally, Robert Boyd, born in Derry, was a soldier executed by firing squad in Playas de San Andrés (Malaga), after unsuccessfully trying to prepare a revolt to defend civil liberties in Spain.

All the information regarding the awards can be found on AMZET’s website: www.uma.es/amzet.

The María Zambrano Center for Transatlantic Studies at the University of Malaga is the organizer of these awards. This is an academic, interuniversity, and multidisciplinary initiative oriented to foster the collaboration and the transfer of knowledge between the different countries at the shores of the Atlantic.
